Thank you for visiting our BRPS fundraising page.
Who are we? Well, I (Simon Lakin) live in Meols on the Wirral, Merseyside with my wife and family. Gerald Edwards (my father-in-law, and rapidly approaching his 70th birthday!) lives in Sychdyn, North Wales with his wife, Margaret. Gerald likes walking and hit on the crazy idea of this year planning a walk from where they live ... to where we live, hence the title "House To House". I (Simon) have a form of RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) which has affected my sight and know of many people affected by this genetic eye disease. I am a member of BRPS and occasionally raise funds for the society, which helps with research into cures for the wide range of conditions that are associated with RP. We decided to dedicate our 20 mile "House To House" walk in 2008 to raising funds for BRPS so please dig deep and sponsor us online.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: British Retinitis Pigmentosa Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
The current date for the walk is Saturday 28th June 2008 (depending on weather), and the route is planned. We will be starting from Sychdyn, and following a path across the 'A' Bridge over the River Dee, along a firing range, along the West Wirral coast next to the Dee, and up the Wirral Way. We hope to reach West Kirby at low tide, walk round Red Rocks, and along the promenade at Hoylake to Meols. Arriving (we hope) in time for tea and a cold drink!!!
Please sponsor us now so we can help find a cure for RP and in the future prevent so many RP sufferers from losing their sight!
Many thanks for your support.
Simon and Gerald
Update 18 June 2008. 10 days to go, have just updated my target from £300 to £500 due to generous donations, particularly from an old friend Chris Arthur from FirstPoint Call and Data Centre Ltd - contact them here for all your telephone answering service needs http://www.firstpointcdc.com/
Update 28 June 2008. Well we did it. We survived. Started at 7 am this morning from Sychdyn, got home around 6pm. We reckon it was more like 25 than 20 - initial estimate using string on a map was not very accurate! Had a great day, crossed the firing range and got told off for ignoring the red flags (oops), no rain, light breeze, no injuries or major blisters (1000 mile socks are great!), and we were welcomed 2 miles from home by our good friend Trevor insisting on buying us a pint at the Plasterers Arms (a short diversion from the route!). More info and photoes to follow on a blog page later... thanks for all who supported us, sponsored us and kept us going! NEVER AGAIN!!!
3 July 2008 - we've reached our target of £500 - yippee! Blog and photoes are on my webpage - http://simonlakin607.vox.com
