I visited Serenje in 2009 for the first time and found a hospital without an operating theatre, but with a maternity unit needing to perform caesarean sections.Patient and surgeon had to drive 100 kms for the privilege.Mother and baby then had to stay until fit and could find transport to get home.many of the mothers are only teenagers, who have left school early because of the pregnancy. We aim to raise the funds to equip the operating theatre(it is now built)and start the building of a girls school dormitory to try and get more girls to complete their education before they have any need for the maternity unit.
We(Elizabeth and I) will be cycling about 1500 miles from Nairobi to Serenje. We will carry all our own luggage.Depart on 13 feb 2011 and will arrive in Serenje some time later and probably a little slimmer.
