My story

A couple of years ago I decided to take on the challenge of walking the Cape Wrath Trail, the UK's toughest, wildest, remotest long distance path.

The route stretches some 200 miles from Fort William to Cape Wrath, the most North Westerly point in the UK (closer to Iceland than to London). Also, being somewhat of a masochist, I set out to prove that it could be done in midwinter.

My first attempt over Christmas 2008 was thwarted by storms, 100mph winds and temperatures that dropped to -18.

Undeterred, I've decided to give it another crack this Christmas - and this time it's personal! It won't quite be the full trail this time, but it will be most of it - starting in Strathcarron and finishing at the cape on Christmas day.

To help me through those long (cold) dark nights in the UK's last true wilderness, I've decided to try and raise a bit of money this time.

I was fortunate enough to work briefly for a charity called Vitalise. They offer holidays with care for people who devote their whole lives to caring for others with serious disabilities. I met so many inspiring, passionate people, and left with my preconceptions about disability turned on their head and my belief in people's amazing capacity for quiet goodness re-enforced.

Vitalise aren't a big showy charity, but their work is hugely important. It seemed appropriate that a trip into the back of beyond should be done in the name of supporting the people I met who hadn't had any sort of break or holiday in 20 years, whilst providing round-the-clock care.

I know we all have many demands made on our generosity these days, but please support me if you can, it's hugely appreciated.
