Every day in the UK, another 240 people wake up to the catastrophic impact of a stroke. The Stroke Association is the leading charity in the UK providing lifelong support for all stroke survivors and their families.

Story

The highest mountains in North Africa and Western Europe. The biggest half marathon in the world, my first full marathon and other races bringing the total to 111 miles of competitive running. All in 2009... why?

On August 7th 2008 my Grandad (John Moore) passed away, having suffered two strokes in quick succession a fortnight before. It was a really tough couple of weeks, which was made that bit easier by the fantastic care/support given to him and us by hospital staff.

The Stroke Association do amazing work in research to help reduce the number of people who have strokes and provide support to those affected, I'd love to be able to help them to do more.

In 2009, I'll be pushing myself by completing the following activities, which I hope will help raise much needed money and awareness for The Stroke Association.

March - Mount Toubkal (4167m) - Winter Ascent of highest peak in North Africa
I reached the summit despite deep snow and poor visibility just after 1pm on March the 11th.

August - Mont Blanc (4810m) - Highest peak in Western Europe
On the 5th August at 1am (GMT) I set off for the summit, at 8:15am after an exhausting climb in strong winds/very low temperatures, I stood on top of Western Europe. And then descended down to Chamonix to complete 15hrs of walking/climbing for the day.

September - Great North Run - The biggest half marathon in the world
Considered one of the biggest and most important half marathons in the world, I ran the 13.1 miles from Newcastle/Gateshead to the sea in 1:56:51 (6mins faster than my previous best time).

November - New York Marathon - My first full marathon
And to finish off, I ran 26.22 miles through the boroughs of New York on Sunday November 1st in 4:41:22 to finish 29,295 out of around 64,000 runners.

As well as that, I ran various other races, wearing a Stroke Association top to raise awareness and get in shape for the bigger events above.

February 22nd - Brighton Half Marathon (2hrs 5mins 3secs)
April 12th - Belvoir Half Marathon (1hrs 57mins 25secs)
May 10th - Hinckley Half Marathon (2hrs 6mins 19secs)
June 14th - Potters Arf Marathon in Stoke (2hrs 8mins 55secs)
July 19th - Sherwood Pines 10k (48mins 55secs)
October 11th - Leicester Half Marathon (1hrs 46mins 57secs)
