In 2010, I will take part in the Ice Warrior expedition to the Arctic Pole. This is otherwise known as the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, and is defined as the furthest point from land in the centre of the Arctic Ocean. This is the last truly significant place on the surface of the planet yet to be reached by mankind.
The primary purpose of this expedition is to gather crucial data about the condition of the snow and ice covering the Arctic Ocean. This data will be used by NASA funded National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) scientists to obtain a firm understanding of the condition of the Ocean, and will help to deliver the reality of climate change to the world.
As a novice polar traveller, this will be a huge undertaking, requiring months of training and hard work.
One of the charities I will be supporting is Jersey Hospice Care.
Jersey Hospice Care is a specialist palliative nursing service which provides holistic care, free of charge, for patients with cancer and motor neurone disease. They are committed to providing a professional service of the highest standards to all those entrusted to their care. Jersey Hospice Care is a charity that receives no government funding. Currently they must raise more than £2 million a year in order to maintain their services.
