Three wheels, two weeks, 5000km and 150cc of occasionally reliable power!

It is a little over a year since we raised our parent’s blood pressure by informing them of our half baked plan to buckle ourselves inside a £300, 1 litre Peugeot 106 and drive 10,000 miles through desert and rainforest to Cameroon. In a similar way that the physical bumps and scrapes have healed, our appalling memories have had time to twist and manipulate our recollections of the trip into an almost, dare I say it, enjoyable experience. It was in this vulnerable state that we stumbled across the Rickshaw Run, so, in a characteristic fashion, we signed straight up, booked our flights.....and only then read what we had got ourselves into.

The three of us are heading to the small Himalayan town of in this Christmas, once there we will use a combination of mispronounced Nepali and interpretive dance to get our hands on a 150cc rickshaw. We will then squeeze into the death trap ready to face 70 other teams in similar feeble contraptions for a three week, 3000 mile, balls out race to the south of .

We see this as a great opportunity to raise awareness and some much needed dosh for a charity that we believe deserves plenty of both. Mercy Corps is a charity that exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. The 2010 Rickshaw Run will fund a new Mercy Corps project in Jasodapur, a rural agricultural village in the region of . The state is one of the poorest in with roughly 40% of the population living below the poverty line. Jasodapur lacks basic health facilities leading to extremely high infant mortality rates. The region also has low crop yields and lacks basic employment opportunities. Mercy Corps will improve farming practices in this region to increase the volume and quality of food, increasing incomes, improving health through a nutritional diet and reducing seasonal migration.
