Story
As I approached my 40th year on this earth I began to feel an overwhelming desire to do something slightly different and possibly more challenging than a casual stroll of a few hundred metres to my local pub. During one of the aforementioned visits to said pub a good friend of mine also experiencing his own mid-life crisis suggested I join him and a group of other recovering alcoholics on a walk up Kilimanjaro, a mere 5,895 metres (19,341 ft). How hard can it be, easy, right??
To quote an oft used phrase, it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Fortunately for me the landlord of The George pub in Addlestone is a man with similar charitable beliefs as myself so he’s holding various fundraising events between now and the epic adventure at the end of January including a raffle that will run until my return at the beginning of February with all proceeds being donated to charity. Additionally, I’ve created this web page so you can make your donations go further by claiming your hard earned tax from the government thereby ensuring it doesn’t go towards bailing out the gambling antics of the overpaid banking sector.
For every step I take towards the summit of Kili I’ll be gaining memories of a lifetime experience. For those suffering with Alzheimer’s they’ll also be facing an uphill struggle as they slowly lose their lifetimes memories with each step. Alzheimer’s is a cruel and debilitating disease that affects not only those afflicted with it but those nearest and dearest to them as they slowly succumb to its effects. The Alzheimer’s Society programme is dedicated to the three C’s. Cause, Cure and Care. The ongoing search for the cause of this illness and its subsequent cure provides hope for the future whilst research into care ensures that there is help at hand for the present.
Please offer your support by donating to this worthy cause. To learn more about this disease visit www.alzheimers.org.uk
I have chosen the Alzheimer’s Society as my charity in memory of my grandfather. The Alzheimer’s Society is the leading UK care and research charity for people with Alzheimer’s disease
