On Thursday 7th July 2005, 52 people died in the worst terrorist attack ever to happen in London. As well as the dead, there are hundreds injured - some horrifically - and people who will be mentally scarred and unable to travel on London's historic transport system (Tube and buses) ever again.
But there are many out there that would like to say, "We Are Not Afraid".
London Mayor Ken Livingstone announced shortly after the bombings the launch of an official relief fund (the London Bombings Relief Charitable Fund, or LBR) for families of the victims.
With this in mind, a mass team Tube challenge attempt was organised for Thursday 25th August, where all participants had to get round the entire network in the space of one day. (*)
We were not trying for any kind of record - we were just out to complete the system as a sign of solidarity and defiance.
So both experienced Tube-challengers and novices alike met up, starting in the same place, and travelled the whole Tube system in a day (*), both for charity and as a form of defiance against terrorism.
As far as the charity angle is concerned, this is where you come in. I would love it if you would sponsor me now that I have completed this challenge (*), donating whatever you can afford, small or large, using the on-line facilities here.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me - LBR will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK tax payer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now!
Nikki Tysoe, a close on-line friend of mine, has also taken part in this challenge, and is the person that alerted me to it. If you wish, you can sponsor her too, via: http://www.justgiving.com/nikkitysoe/
You can also find out more about the challenge in general at: http://www.tuberelief.co.uk/
Many thanks for your support.
(* = I managed to pass through 264 of the 274 Tube stations accessible on the day - unforeseen delays on the Central and Northern lines prevented me and my team of 5 from visiting all 274, but we did try our very best! Without the delays, we would definitely have succeeded.)
