The Jungle Marathon is a race that consists of 200km running through the Amazon Jungle, in searing heat and suffocating humidity. It is entered by only seventy people per year and represents the ultimate test of physical endurance and mental strength. The ground covered includes, swamps, rivers, and mile upon mile of incredibly steep hills and gorges all covered by plant and wildlife you would normally associate with primary Jungle. One section of the race requires the non stop completion of 92km (over two marathons back to back) in an area infested by jaguar and known locally as the “Dark Zone”.
Set over 5 days, competitors are required to be completely self-sufficient and will be required to carry all their equipment with them including food, clothing and survival equipment.
The temperature is expected to be in the late 90’s with humidity between 85 to 95%. Every size of spider imaginable, jaguars, snakes, scorpions and wild pigs are a few of the wildlife will likely encounter.
The rules are simple: Get to the finish line alive and unaided. My chosen charity is Forget Me Not which is a West Yorkshire based charity. They help local families that have children with life-limiting and terminal illnesses by providing respite centre's and hospices for them.
