RACE DIARY Sat 24th 6am: James is off! Sat 24th 10.30am: Completed first marathon and now at Warwick. Luckily the ground is quite firm so far!! Sat 24th 5pm: Second marathon done! Bit of a wobble but going well and on schedule at the moment. Sat 24th 9.30pm: Run 70 miles, nearly half way! Just reached Navigation bridge. Last few miles pretty tough, but much more positive now almost cracked the halfway point. Sat 24th 10pm: Support team try to sleep whilst a wedding party goes on around them. Sun 25th 4am: Reached Leighton Buzzard, 90 miles. James looking good but it's just started raining - bummer! Sun 25th 6.30am: Cold and wet, but now run 100 miles - whohoo!! Sun 25th 11.30am: Tough patch, really soaked, but finally looks to be drying out. At Watford and have run 115 miles. Sun 25th 1.30pm: Although falling asleep whilst running and feeling delirious, James is doing really well, actually looking pretty good and has run 120 miles now. Sun 25th 5pm: Big wobble at 123 miles, very, very sleepy. I, Pip, walk with James for the next 5 miles. James gets his second breathe and is now upto 130 miles - Go James, go James!! Sun 25th 7.30pm: 136 miles and going! Now on the home stretch... Sun 25th 10.20pm: James has done it!!!!!!! How amazing is that?! :D He came 19th and received a fantastic medal!!! Mon 26th 1am: James is now home safe and having some much deserved sleep. Incredibly, apart from tiredness and a few blisters, he's in great health and spirits :)
FINAL RESULTS James ran the Grand Union in 40hrs 24 mins. He was 19 out of the 29 who finished from the 75 who started. He now joins the previous 134 runners who have ever achieved it!! Here's the final runners' list: GUCR Results.
EVENT DETAILS On 24-25th May I took part in the Grand Union Canal Race, a non-stop, 145 mile long ultra-marathon from Birmingham to Little Venice, London along the towpath of the canal. This is equivalent to running 5 and 1/2 consecutive marathons. Runners are required to complete the race in a time limit of 45 hours, but are not allowed to stop for more than 40 minutes at a time.
