Uganda
A bloody, indiscriminate and unpredictable conflict has terrorised the people of northern Uganda for 20 years. The conflict between the Government of Uganda and armed militia, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), has been described by the UN as the "world's most neglected crisis". Previously self-sufficient farmers have been forced from their homes and off their fertile land to live in overcrowded camps. At night many children are so afraid to sleep in their own homes that they walk to the nearest town to sleep on the streets where they feel safe from the threat of abduction. The Red Cross is the only organisation that is able to work in northern Uganda without armed escorts. Its neutrality and independence enables it to reach vulnerable people whose lives have been torn apart by conflict.
James Visits Uganda
Scottish actor James McAvoy has just returned from an emotional trip to northern Uganda where he spent four days seeing projects supported by the British Red Cross. James travelled to camps for internally displaced people, forced to flee their homes during more than 20 years of brutal civil war. He saw for himself the life- saving work being carried out by the network of Red Cross staff and volunteers. The Last King of Scotland actor was familiar with the country having spent more than three months filming in the country but was horrified by what he saw in the north. "It's amazing to think that some of the people I met have been in these camps for five, ten, sometimes even 15 years. The conditions in the camps were awful and it's horrific to think this has been going on for so long and that so few people actually know about it. The Red Cross is providing essential support to those in the camps and also to those who are starting to return home.
