My story

On the 6th of March 2008 my brother Sean was taken from us all.  Sean and I were very close.  I have found coming to terms with it very difficult.  I have found that running has given me an opportunity to be by myself and for me to think clearly about all the memories that I have.

Sean was diagnosed with epilepsy just before his 18th birthday.  Apart from putting an end to his aspirations to join the RAF he never let it dictate the way he lived his life.  In fact he dreamt of designing aircraft which future RAF pilots would fly.  This was the driving force behind his decision to study aerospace engineering at Swansea University.

Although we are unlikely to ever know the real reason for Sean’s death the information we have so far suggests that it was linked to his condition.  In the UK alone about 1,000 people die each year from epilepsy related deaths.  Many of these deaths are unexplainable like Sean’s.  In common with so many other conditions we still have so much to learn.  We rely upon the work of charities to advance our knowledge and increase awareness amongst those who carry these conditions and their families.

I have always wanted to do a marathon as I have always been up for a challenge.  But I have never had a reason to put myself through all the hell which training for one brings.  Sean has given me a reason.

I have been successful in gaining a charity place with the Epilepsy Action marathon team to compete in the London Marathon 2009 which will be held on the 26th of April.  I will be running solely in Sean's memory.

Epilepsy Action helps over 550,000, people every year through its range of services including its advice and information centre, branch network and accredited volunteer scheme.

In order to take part in this event I have been given a target of £1350 to raise, although I would like to reach a lot more.  I believe with all your help we should be able to reach this target figure.

The money will be donated to Epilepsy Action to help them in their vital work of which around 90% is funded from donations like yours.
