May 18th
I've finished! Yesterday I was greeted at Lands End by John and my friends with champage, banners and flags. What a great end to a tough ride. :-)

May 6th. Have now completed five days. Staying in dunning between Perth and Edinburgh. Biked 292 miles now. Yesterday the hardest - 60 miles over the Cairngorm mountains
On May 2nd 2011 I will start a 925 mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in aid of Peace Direct. I am doing it on my own and unsupported, so carrying my things with me and staying in B&B’s. It will take me (I hope) 16 days, averaging 58 miles a day. It's quite a hilly route, so during that time I will cycle up the equivalent of Snowdon almost 13 times! I have a blog about my preparation for the ride.
I am both anxious and excited! I am planning to raise at least £3150 for Peace Direct. When I do the ride I will be 63, so this is £50 for each year of my life. Peace Direct is a charity working with local peace makers in Sudan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and other countries.
Many children grow up never having known what it is like to live in a country that is at peace.
The work of charities and NGO’s is restricted or stopped altogether when there is civil unrest or military conflict.
Conflict disrupts infrastructure, democratic processes, education, farming, employment and life expectancy .
Peace Direct doesn’t go in and try to sort it out – instead it seeks out local peace makers and supports them in their work to bring conflict resolution to their own communities.
40 per cent of conflicts will restart within 10 years of a peace treaty being signed. 90 per cent of the people who die in those conflicts are not armed forces, but civilians, many of them children. We need to stop these conflicts from restarting, to stop people from dying.
Please support me by supporting Peace Direct.
It’s early days yet for me, but it would be great to get the money rolling in for such a worthwhile cause – then all I’ll have to concentrate on is the training.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep and donate now.
thanks, Jane
