My story

May Update : WE MADE IT !

On Sunday May 18th, round about 5.30am, four intrepid Snailwalkers crossed the 100Km finish line. After climbing all through the night ( again .. we had set off on Friday morning ) we arrived at Yamanakako, completely exhausted. The course was indescribably tough, a relentless, double-ultra-marathon over mountain terrain. Injuries and attrition had been high : fewer than half of the teams finished intact.

We each burned over 20,000 calories, ascending a total of 4,600m ( ~14,000 feet ). To put that in perspective, Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain, is 4,800m. More of this kind of data, trip reports and photos at http://snailwalkers.com as soon as our bodies recover enough.

Just a note that Oxfam Japan will continue to receive donations for a short while so we'll keep this page up. Please dont hesitate to send the team a congratulatory beer, I mean donation !

Thank you for visiting our page

About the event ..

"The Trailwalker" is a 100Km ( 60 mile ) journey over the volcanic mountains of Hakkone National Park in Japan. The course has to be completed by our entire team of four athletes (?) in less than 48 hours. We'll be climbing through the night and looking forward to some awesome views in the morning.

Oxfam gaily call it a "satisfying physical endeavour !", then "a great challenge!" before finally admitting that it is in fact "a challenging endurance event"

About the cause ..

More importantly, the cause is a fine one. Oxfam needs no introduction, and this particular campaign will fund projects and emergency aid in :

● Darfur, Sudan ● Cambodia ● India ● South Africa

( From Oxfam Japan )

Update : Oxfam's latest update on the situation in Sudan
