My story

Previously...

2002 Manchester Marathon Fininshing Line Mike & Jay have just crossed the line, and the race is being discontinued due to organisational difficulties, cue Jonny:

Jonny (younger and fitter): "Mike, Jay, I wanna do a marathon too, would you ever do another one?

Jay/Mike (perfectly synchronized, and ALSO much younger and fitter): "No f****ing way."

Later that day...Mike: "The only way I'll do another is if the Manchester Marathon comes back" (Knowing full well it probably wouldn't ever return).

THEN...in 2012...IT CAME BACK!....AND WE'RE VERY AFRAID...KEEP READING...

More background:

It’s that special time of year when a couple of things happen. Central to these events is the delusion that Jay, Mike and Jonny seem to share: that they are still, in some way, ‘athletic specimens’.

So the first thing to happen is this: In a wave of youthful optimism and a solemn (if ultimately unfulfilled) vow to fine-tune our lifestyles, we sign up to the Wilmslow Half Marathon. We then systematically nag you fine people for sponsorship money for what is undoubtedly a hugely important charity – Cancer Research. Still with us? Only this year we’re not doing it. A website with the aforementioned sentence on its homepage was brought to my attention. A mere 2 days ago, this seemed like a mighty fine idea. Upon actually signing up for the bugger...not so much.

Some of you are already laughing. Others may be silently commending us for our spirit. We, on the other hand, are scared. Scared sh*tless I tell you. Jay and Mike are because they have experienced this before. Jonny is because of the not-too-subtle threats that are swirling around in his head after having this bright idea: “you have no idea what you’re letting yourself in for, boy” – is probably the most ominous one at the forefront of his mind.

I’ll spare you the graphic descriptions of pain that awaits us over the coming months, as well as the day itself. Actually...no I won’t. This is what you want to read isn’t it? This is what makes you donate, am I right? You’re sick. Do you know what it’s like applying petroleum jelly....down there? Followed by the inevitable, recurring nightmares of your brothers grinning at you with their hands down their shorts? No.

How about the prospect of bleeding from that sacred area behind our coin-purses? The only saving grace of that pain is that it distracts you from the blood emanating from your armpits and nipples. Be under no illusion the run will be pure agony, the soreness after arguably worse and furthermore food we consumed in the 90’s will be flying out of us, both pre and post-race. It is at this point that I fear I may have gone too far. I don’t care. We’re doing it despite the certain pain we will suffer. So what we need is the thought of your generosity to help us run through the tears. So donate what you can, and we will love you forever. Then meet us for the post run shenanigans. We’ll be the guys that are drunk in the corner, milking it for all it’s worth from our favourite barmaids.

Jokes aside it’s for a great cause. I thank you in advance, both people who have previously sponsored us, and newbies who we intend to give the old shake-down. Without you, there’s absolutely no chance we would’ve raised what we have so far (close to £2,000 online alone), and no chance of it EVER being worthwhile.

Peace Out.

Jonny, Mike and JAY
