So, why Help The Aged???

 In my opinion Help The Aged is a very worthy cause to run for, afterall, old age will creep up on us all one day. (visit Helptheaged.org.uk to see what they are doing for elderly people across the UK and worldwide)  In part I am doing this in memory of my Grandparents who both sadly passed away this year, but  I am also running to raise awareness of the issues and problems facing all elderly people today.  The facts below are astonising if you really think about it- Would you really want to spend christmas day alone??

The UK already has more people aged over 60 than under 16 and by 2031 almost a quarter of the population will be over state pension age

 

Over 2 million people (one in five of the UK pensioner population) live below the poverty line.

 

Over 1 million pensioner households live in fuel poverty. Spending more than ten per cent of their income just keeping warm.

 

Over 1 million older people spent Christmas Day alone in 2004

 

Bogus callers gain entry to some 180,000 older people’s homes per year and steal from 122,000 of these

 

The number of people with dementia is set to double to 1.5 million by 2031

 

Every five hours an older person dies as a result of an accidental fall in the home

Age is something that affects everyone, so please sponsor me for the Flora London Marathon if you can and help me raise money and promote awareness of disadvantaged older people. I am training damn hard for this, out running in the dark and the rain when id much rather be curled up on the sofa, eating a fat chocolate cake and watching Eastenders! But im finding the strength, time and effort because its something I really believe in.
