Asthma is a chronic condition which affects 400,000 people in Scotland and 7% of the population of the UK, a figure which is on the rise, particularly among children.
Asirus is a Scottish charity, founded in 2002 whose remit is the support of asthma sufferers in the remote and rural areas of Scotland They work in conjunction with the Scottish Ambulance Service and the FIre and Rescue Service, to support asthma suffererers but also diabetic, epileptic, cardiac and anaphylactic patients and those whose medical conditions render them vulnerable, particularly given their location. Asirus has launched several inititiatives, including GRIP (Grid Reference Identification Project) which enables ambulance crews to locate patients much more quickly.
I wanted to support Asirus because I have asthma, but have had the comfort of having easily accessible emergency treatment. When i was seven I had whooping cough and was on a nebuliser for several weeks. Had I been in a remote location, like many asthma sufferers in Scotland, my condition might have got much more serious.
As an asthmatic, running a half-marathon will be a challenge, so please donate as much as you can afford.
