In April 2009, I shall be taking part in a medical research trek to Everest Base Camp. The research, co-ordinated by Caudwell Xtreme Everest (www.xtreme-everest.co.uk) and University College London Hospital, is a further study into hypoxia (low oxygen levels) and human performance at extreme altitude. This research is aimed at improving the care of the critically ill and other patients where hypoxia is a problem (such as the very young, the elderly and patients with lung disease). After spending 2 nights at Base Camp at 5380m, I shall attempt to summit Island Peak at 6189m and place flags on the summit; for the charity and my main sponsors (inc my employer, Varian Medical Systems)
