UPDATE!!
My mum (75) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's three years ago. At first the drugs meant that we didnt notice too much of change in her. Now the battle is slowly being lost and Dad is now her full time carer, night and day. She has good days and bad days but having a conversation about even simple matters is very difficult now. Her "score" at the memory clinic has dipped below 10 which means that when the current 3 month supply of drugs runs out she won't get any more and inevitably her condition will deteriorate even quicker.
Slowly but surely I am losing my Mum, Dad is losing his wife and life long companion , Kate is losing her mother-in-law and James, Jack, Ollie and Vicky are losing a much loved grandma. She can no longer make those fantastic chocolate cakes or trifles that she was once renowned for (dad now does all the cooking) and she struggles to remember our names, her own birthday and even what we celebrate at Easter or Christmas. It is all very sad.
Dad battles on with the world of social services, memory clinics and assessments, red tape and endless forms, for what is still an under-recognised illness which has the social stigma cancer did 20 years ago. He does it because like the rest of the family, we love Mum dearly and want the best for her, whilst she can still comprehend what life is for and who we all are.
So please sponsor me now to run 10 miles around the streets and sea front of Portsmouth. The race is on the 25th October. My wife, Kate, made a herculian effort climbing Ben Nevis on the 19th September in attrocious conditions, and has raised nearly £700 for Alzheimers, so I am hoping that together we can raise £1000!
Many, many thanks.
