I am raising money as part of the “ Just Four Quid” campaign. JFQ aims to raise £1 million in a year for ME Research UK and the ME Association’s Ramsay Research Fund, two charities who are funding biomedical research into ME/CFS. Every week, the blog gives a tip for saving money and asks people to donate part of their saving. It is for me to put my own donations on during the year and for my friends and family to donate in support of my personal fundraising effort if you want to: giving "just four quid" would make my day (year)!
Both charities aim to swing the balance of scientific research back to where it should always have been – away from sticking-plaster “psychological management” of this devasting condition and towards biomedical research for its physical causes, leading to a clear diagnostic test, treatments and a possible cure.
I am taking part in research funded by MERUK at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary and am benefitting from access to an unlicensed drug to treat my POTS (a related condition) so this money raised will really affect people's lives, as this charity is already helping me!
There are an estimated quarter of a million people with ME/CFS in the UK; our £1 million is “just four quid” each! The government isn’t funding biomedical research into this condition so we must fund it ourselves. Please help both by taking part and by telling others with (or without) ME/CFS about the campaign so they can join in.
After living with ME for over ten years and my sister also having had the illness since she was 11, I am regularly frustrated and frankly depressed by how little seems to change in the lives of people with ME over the years. However there ARE now people conducting quality research and instead of moaning about how awful the situation is, I want to be part of supporting them in making a change for the better. The only way this will happen is by research to understand this illness better and to then develop real treatments to make people's lives easier to LIVE.
