December 4th 2009 sees me trundling a marathon starting from Everest Base Camp at 5184m. The route follows the valleys 1638m downhill and 450m uphill on rough tracks.
The Everest Marathon is a charity race, raising money for various Nepalese health and education charities.
My aim is to raise money to support the dental clinic in the Khumbu valley beneath Everest.
It does not sound much but ........
- Nepal is among the five poorest countries in the world.
- Rugged mountains cover 85% of the land and the country is virtually roadless.
- Travel throughout the hill regions is only possible on foot and all basic goods have to be carried by men or beasts.
- 49% live below the poverty line, based on calories, not cash.
- The average annual cash income is only £125 / US $200.
- Many areas lack basic facilities like clean water, elementary education and medical facilities.
