Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running in the Great North Run this year raising money for The Prostate Cancer charity. I have chosen to run for The Prostate Cancer Charity as it is one close to my heart, unfortunately my Grandad was diagnosed with the disease in December 2007.

Sam Jardine was born on 18 April 1931 and lived in Upper Nithsdale, Dumfrieshire. He joined the Kings Own Scottish Borderers and saw active service in Korea until 1952. He left Scotland with my Granny in search of work when he was 32 and relocated in Thringstone, Leicestershire. He found work as a miner at Whitwick pit along with other families who had also relocated from villages around Scotland.

He had an outgoing character and integrated with his new community. For a number of years he played the bagpipes in full tartan dress on the village green surrounded by locals with linked arms singing along to Auld Lang Syne to welcome in the New Year.

My Grandad was given the all clear from the disease in 2008 due to the fantastic research carried out by The Prostate Cancer charity. This gave him another 18 months with a good quality of life.  In May 2010 he had a ruptured aneurism which put him into intensive care for 5 weeks.  Unfortunately, he passed away on the 20 June 2010.

My Grandad leaves a wife (my Granny) 3 children, 9 grand children and 5 great grand children, we all miss him greatly.

The Prostate Cancer charity gave my grandad that extra 18 months good quality of life that he enjoyed in his new house with my Granny.

This is all due to their research on this disease which is only funded by donations such as the one that you are hopefully going to leave.

Thanks for giving - it doesn't matter how much you donate it will all come in useful.  Why don't you think about doing something like this in the future yourself  to raise money for a charity that may be close to your heart. You don't have to climb everest it could just be a sponsored walk.
