Hi, thank you for visiting my fundraising page. As you are aware, I'm running the Royal Parks Half Marathon on Sunday 12th October 2008 and I'm running for the charity WebPlay in the memory of my mate Carol Kay who was also a trustee of WebPlay. We hope to raise enough money to create the Carol Kay Teachers Award and support the work of WebPlay.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: WEBPLAY (UK) gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. Thank you for your support and wish me luck for the half marathon 12th October'08 Carol, lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at the end of July. Carol was one of the most inspirational people that I have known, not only a great friend but also someone that I learnt so much from during my career. Carol always had faith in my abilities and always supported me in my work and we had a great friendship for many many years. During this year Carol asked me to help her with a charity that she was a trustee of www.webplay.org this was a charity that I knew well and one that a few years ago I too was a trustee. A few months ago I was voted back on to the trustee board by my fellow trustees to become the Chairman of the Trustee Board (a great honour). At our last Trustee meeting, WebPlay CEO Sydney Thornbury (who was also a great friend of Carol’s) suggested that we create a WebPlay Carol Kay Teacher of the Year Award, this annual award would be given to an outstanding teacher who has made a significant contribution to their school. The award will allow a school to get involved in the WebPlay project (more details about the WebPlay project follow at the end of the email). After receiving permission from Carol’s sisters and brother (who were proud that Carol will be remembered) I am honoured to announce that I will be running a half marathon in October (yes this October…yes just 59 days away!!!). I’ve never run a half marathon in my life, in fact the last run I did was for the 381 bus to Waterloo…and I missed it! So I guess you know why I need your help. Details about the half marathon can be found at http://www.royalparkshalf.com/the-run.html Carol was a tremendously gifted, generous, kind and warm person and I just could not sit back and do nothing, Carol’s illness robbed the world of an inspirational woman who always put others before herself. During Carol’s final week she received a glowing letter from Prime Minister Gordon Brown, thanking Carol for all her work in helping others from her time as Chair of Volunteer Reading Help to the work she did to create the Education Business Partnership programs across the UK. Carol had an illustrious career from being a teacher (and head teacher of Haberdasher Askes) to a career in the private sector with BP. Carol was a life-long volunteer and was one of the key people that helped me to create the Business Volunteers project at Volunteer Centre Southwark (at that time I was working for Age Concern and met Carol on one of our first business volunteer challenge days). I know Carol’s family are touched that WebPlay are remembering Carol by creating the Carol Kay Teachers Award and I would like to ask you to help me to raise funds for this project. If you do not feel comfortable donating online (although I assure you it is totally safe) you can send a cheque made payable to WebPlay to : WebPlay 1st Floor, Downstream Building, 1 London Bridge, London, SE1 9BG I really hope you can help me to raise lots of money for a very worthwhile cause. If you are unable to donate then please do think of me on Sunday 12th October 2008 and send me your positive thoughts. With my best wishes and thanks,
John
