My story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cancer Research UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

A SPECIAL NOTE FROM JOHN

I like a challenge!!  This ageing ex-athlete closer to 60 than 50 is taking part in the Burnham-on-Sea Triathlon on June 14th.  The challenge is a 500m swim, a 20km(12.5 miles) bike ride and finally a 5km(3.1 miles) run.  I am just hoping to complete the course and may even do well in the veterans section!!

I am hoping to raise funds for two charities and have set up two ‘justgiving’ pages, one for The Chronic Granulomatous Disorder (GGD) Research Trust(www.justgiving.com/johncapell) and the other for Cancer Research(www.justiving.com/johncapell1).  You can support just one of the two or split your generous donation by visiting both pages.

Many of you will know that Simon our 29 year old son has CGD.  He tries to live life to the full but often has setbacks that we mere mortals would find incredibly challenging but he always bounces back and we are very proud of him.  Raising money for the trust will ensure that more support can be given to sufferers and more funds can be directed to research.

Fifteen years ago I guess we were fortunate that our living family had not been affected by the scourge of cancer.  My mum died over 10 years ago as a result of cervical cancer – I still miss her terribly, she should have been 81 on April 23rd.  Sadly in early May my Dad, Eric, was diagnosed with bowel cancer with additional problems on his liver - he will be my inspiration on the day. Then in 2005 Ruth’s Dad died as a result of prostate cancer.  During the last 10 years both Ruth and I have been unlucky too. Ten years ago Ruth was undergoing chemotherapy following ovarian cancer – her treatment was successful and she is fit and healthy with a new head of hair.  Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had an extremely successful robotic prostatectomy.  I didn’t have much hair in the first place it just became grayer at this time!  We are now both in full remission and thoroughly enjoying all that we do in semi-retirement.

Your donation is hugely appreciated; I will let you know how I did!

Hope you made it ok. Donation by Roger & Andi 18/06/09
