The Marathon des Sables was without doubt the toughest physical and mental ordeal I have ever faced. It makes no difference if you finish in 1st or last place; you navigate the same course and face the same obstacles with the same rationed amount of water. In my opinion, everyone who completes the Marathon des Sables is a winner. I managed to do it in 40 hours finishing 241 of 923. A further 96 were forced to withdraw from the event.
Thank you to my family, friends, and all the people who kindly donated funds to Help for Heroes via this page..
Back at home with my MdS finisher's medal, my personal challenge is over. Unlike our wounded service personnel for whom it has only just begun, they truly have earned the right to be called heroes.
