The ataxias are diseases of the nervous system. They can affect anyone, from babies to adults. As ataxia progresses, people's disabilities increase, until they may depend entirely on others. There is currently no cure. Ataxia UK is the leading national support and research charity for people with ataxia, their families and carers.

This being my 50th year I have decided to do something memorable and for a good cause. On 14th June I am travelling to Chamonix in France to attempt to climb Mont Blanc via the Gouter route and get safely down again.  At 4808 metres it is Western Europe's highest mountain and nearly 4 times the height of Ben Nevis. At this altitude the air is thin and there is a need to acclimatise. Altitude sickness prevents 1 in 3 climbers from reaching the top. The weather will hopefully be good in June. The mountain will be veiled white above 2500m 

Deirdre (Mrs Wisdom) eldest sister died in 2001 having suffered from Freidrichs Ataxia from the age of 9 years. Confined to a wheelchair at the age 14 years and losing her battle with the disease at 49 years of age. Ataxia UK is the leading UK charity for all people affected by Ataxia.
