Ataxia is a type of neurological condition that affects balance, speech, and co-ordination. Ataxia is progressive, meaning it gets worse with time, until people become entirely dependent on others for all their needs. Over 10,000 people in the UK have ataxia and there is currently no cure.

Ataxia UK is the national charity for people affected by ataxia. We provide unique services and support, including a dedicated helpline and advocacy service; events and conferences where people can meet and share information; welfare grants; a quarterly magazine; a website with lots of information and a discussion forum; publications, films, and reports. As well as our specialist services, in the last five years we have spent over £3 million on research into possible treatments and cures for ataxia. Our vision is a world without ataxia and, with the help of our brilliant supporters, we are working towards this every day.

My story

This being my 50^th year I have decided to do something memorable and for a good cause. On 14th June I am travelling to Chamonix in France to attempt to climb Mont Blanc via the Gouter route and get safely down again. At 4808 metres it is Western Europe's highest mountain and nearly 4 times the height of Ben Nevis. At this altitude the air is thin and there is a need to acclimatise. Altitude sickness prevents 1 in 3 climbers from reaching the top. The weather will hopefully be good in June. The mountain will be veiled white above 2500m

Deirdre (Mrs Wisdom) eldest sister died in 2001 having suffered from Freidrichs Ataxia from the age of 9 years. Confined to a wheelchair at the age 14 years and losing her battle with the disease at 49 years of age. Ataxia UK is the leading UK charity for all people affected by Ataxia.
