My story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please give what you can as your donations will go a long way and towards a fantastic cause that is very close to my heart.

On October 24th i am flying out to India with a good friend of mine to compete in an Ultra-Marathon, the Himalayan 100 Stage Race.

This involves running 100 miles in 5 days across some pretty precarious terrain at an altitude of 12,000 feet all in the name of achievement and representing a fantastic charity, Meningitis UK. There are only around 50 athletes that get to do this  event every year so i have been quite lucky (??) to talk my way into it.

I have spent 6 months of my life in preparation for this event and have put everything on hold in order to do my very best when representing this fantastic charity. I have lost my social life as i have been running around 60 miles a week in all weather at weekends and before work to gain the best possible preparation for this trip. Thus, i need to make a few friends when i get back from India as i now have none!  As well as this i have been using an altitude simulator which gave me altitude sickness and have not had a drink for around 34 years (slight exaggeration but you get my point).

The most drastic move however was shaving off my beloved locks in an aim to be more streamlined. My poor scalp had not seen the light of day for 15 years and to say it was ghost white and very unattractive is an understatement. Suffice to say i will not be doing that again.

So why does having the opportunity to represent Meningitis UK in this event mean so much to me?

Meningitis is a disease that has affected people close to me for many years and has taken the lives of the children of 2 good friends of mine as well as changing the life of somebody very special to me who contracted viral meningitis 3 years ago. It still amazes me that this disease has so little exposure hence the threats of this disease are still largely incognito across the nation. So if i can raise awareness surrounding Meningitis by sacrificing myself to achieve something significant then it will be more then worth the hard work. Who knows...something as simple as you reading this may  prompt you to research Meningitis which could actually save a life.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Meningitis UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.

Jonny
