You're going... where?
To Moldova! It's the European country that no one's ever heard of, nestled between Romania and the Ukraine. It's also the poorest country in Europe, and its women and children are among the most trafficked people in the world. Shockingly, an estimated 25 per cent of children are living without their parents and are at high risk of unemployment and falling prey to prostitution and forced labour.
What are you doing there?
I'm
going as part of a team, to help run a Salvation Army children's summer
camp for around 120 underprivileged children. We're aiming to put a bit
of a dent in those slightly overwhelming statistics above! We'll be
doing games, crafts, singing and giving the children some much needed
love and attention.
Why have you chosen to do
this?
Sadly, despite the great need in Moldova, the camp was going to be cancelled this year - the Moldovan SA just doesn't have the resources to run it on their own. My team has stepped in to keep the camp running for one more year - so we really WILL be making a difference to the lives of vulnerable children.
For me personally,
I was challenged by the fact that these children are mostly forgotten
and ignored by the world, and without our help, they will continue to be
so.
What happens at the end of the camp?
We
will be working alongside Salvation Army staff in Moldova. They already
have a relationship with the kids and will continue to do so once the
camp ends, so we're not working in limbo. However, without our support,
the camp won't even start.
