BATH HALF MARATHON 15th MARCH 2009

Desmond Nganga and Julie Martin took up the challenge of running 13.1 miles in the Bath Half Marathon to raise funds for Out of Afrika, a Dorset based registered charity that works at grass root level with communities in Kenya to advance education and improve livelihoods to orphans and disadvantaged children.

Des, who runs the charity with Julie says” After much struggle and strife our dream of Out of Afrika establishing a training college came true when we opened the doors to students at International Centre of Technology (ICT)in January 2007”.

The college is growing slowly with currently around 100 students with much work to be done to continue with the building of the main college, complete the dining area and create a sports area for the students.

Maintenance and running costs are high with around 25 permanent staff salaries to be paid each month.

Until ICT becomes sustainable the charity needs to raise funds through various fund raising activities and grants.

Having never run in a race or marathon before the dynamic duo took up position with around 15,000 other runners on a lovely warm Sunday morning in the beautiful city of Bath. Now was the time to find out if the training had been enough to get around the mostly flat 13.1 course. Though Des was hoping to give his fellow Kenyan marathon runners a run for their money he came a bit unstuck when his already injured ankle swelled up and started to become painful. The many first aid stops along the route provided ice packs to help ease the swelling. This slowed us down but were pleased to finish in 3.11 and hope next time the time can be improved.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored us by donating on and offlince and if anyone else would like to and support the work of Out of Afrika you can still sponsor us. We will update the total amount raised by the end of March. Julie
