Just Christmas is an invitation to do Christmas differently with a focus on those in need rather than ourselves. This year we are raising money for 2 projects, micro-enterprise in India and Pass the Baton with Bethany here in Edinburgh.
The setting up of micro-enterprise projects has the potential for over 2,000 of the poorest Dalit caste to gain a sustainable income for life. The Dalits, otherwise known as the outcasts or untouchables, have traditionally held the most degrading jobs seen as no suitable for other members of Indian society. This has held them from economic opportunities such as the use of banks, education and training trapping them in a cycle of the same menial and degrading jobs with little prospect for savings or a future.
This year we have set ourselves the target of raising £35,000 with the aim of giving 500 Dalit families economic sustainability and a future. This money will be used to provide start-up loans for micro-enterprises as well as training in business skills for those receiving them. With a one off injection of £35,000 we help to establish 500 micro-enterprises with support and training from the charity Red International. A one-off payment of £358 will provide economic independence for a Dalit family for life.
Passing the Baton is Bethany’s community resettlement project which works to prevent repeat homelessness. It works by helping formerly homeless or vulnerable people to resettle into communities. The service is coordinated by trained staff and delivered by the people that we believe can really make the difference – the people in our communities. We equip volunteers to support families and individuals to paint and decorate their house, participate in social events, and build positive relationships. We help people to settle in their home and integrate into the community. For more information please visit www.bethanychristiantrust.com
