My story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

We are set to do the BUPA Great North Run in Newcastle on 20th September 2009 for the Cats Protection - South Wirral Branch.

It a mere half-marathon ...... just 13.1 miles - EEEK!  To make the race a little more interesting (?!) we are going to run the whole race dressed as kinky cats!! Our race outfits are kept as a secret for the time being, but the picture opposite might give you the gist of things!

We are currently in training .... and boy its tough!  Karen is not a happy kitty at the minute and there are several (!!) grumblings during the runs, but given time, this should get easier .... hopefully!  We are covering approximately 3 miles (5K) per run and will be doing our first 4 miler this Sunday (7th June).

The 4 miler went suprising well!!  Not too many grumblings from Karen .... this may be due to her new running shoes?!  We braved torrential rain yesterday (10th June)and managed to run 3 miles in 28 mins!  Watch this space ....

We have a few warm-up races planned: 1) The Rotary 10K Charity Run on 28th June 2009, and 2) The Race for life (5K) on 5th July.

You will be pleased to know that both the 10K and 5K races have been completed!  Kim completed the 10K in 57:20 and, Karen 59:40 .... the 5K (dressed as kinky cow-girls!!) was completed by Kim in 24:55 and, Karen 26:19!!  Hurrah!  We had quite a few (!!!) dress problems for the 5K ..... but have learn't by our mistakes :-) I think several fancy dress practice runs are in order before the Great North Run!

Last Sunday (19th July) we completed our longest ever run .... 7.5 miles!  This was achieved in 70:37 minutes of continuous running.  It was a VERY difficult run, but we got there.  We now have to steadly increase our mileage over the coming weeks.  We are currently running 4 nights a week, with Sunday's being our biggest distance run. Karen's grumblings have decreased somewhat .... I think that now she is in complete shock of the miles/route covered?!  I will just keep quiet and listen to my I-Pod ...... makes life easier!

Sunday 25th July ........ can you believe we have just run 8.5 miles?!  The route was a very (!) hilly one, but this is absolutely necessary, as the Great North Run apparently is a very VERY hilly half marathon.  We finished in 78.30 minutes ..... legs very heavy at the end.  Rewarded ourselves with a lovely glass of wine :-)

Monday 26th July ....... we are both struggling to walk!  We look like two old ladies!  Roll on 20th September!

Well, we have made it to September!  The past few weeks have been full of many trials and tribulations ..... training was going really well until I (Kim) picked up an injury after a long run :-(   I managed to damage the soft tissue around my hip and am now having physio.  Things should be OK, and in any case, I have another hip!  So come rain or shine we will still be running (or slow jogging!) the Great North Run.  Karen is being a real trooper and carrying on with the training - I am following in hot persuit on my bike.  We figured that peddle-power would keep my aerobic fitness going until the 20th September.  We have both joined a gym in an attempt to strengthen our decrepit bodies!  17 days to go :-)

Sunday 13th September 2009 – ONE WEEK TO GO!!!

HELLO!

Well …… 1 week to go to the Great North Run …. how scary!

If you have been looking at our online blog you may have seen that training has been somewhat problematic … and come to a little bit of a standstill.

I (Kim – the blonde stupid one!) has managed to pick up an injury and, as a result has been having physio for the past 4 weeks . Three different physiotherapists later -  I have made progress – hurrah!  I am still not running (saving that for the big day), but am doing all prescribed exercises … cycling … weight training …. and keeping Karen in check!!  She is doing remarkably well.  She actually now enjoys running (!!!) and misses our training sessions together!!  Which, (little does she know) will be back with a vengeance one day soon 

We are now doing our final preparations for the race … diet (rubbish! …. no wine  or chocolate allowed!) … rest ( rubbish …. in our line of  work – cattery super busy!!) …. getting fancy dress together (excellent!!) ….. we have just ordered our final pieces …. claws and whiskers!!!

We would just like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support – it means so so much to us – thank you.  We have exceeded our target and hopefully are going to trap some more customers in the office in the coming week for sponsorship .

Thank you once again!

SATURDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER  - 1 DAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well .... this is it!  1 day to go and we are really getting very nervous!  Thank you to everyone who has helped us make it to the magical £1000.00 - it really did bring a tear to our eyes when we reached the target!  We are very touched by everybodys generosity.

We will shortly be heading to Newcastle .... armed with our tail ... claws etc.  Watch out for us on TV (BBC1 9.30-1.30) - we are the ones that, according to Karen's brother Mike, look like dominatix kitties .....hmmmmmmm!

We will post pictures of us soon :-)

Thank you all once again for helping us to help all those little kitties in need.

Many, many thanks

Kim and Karen
