In October the children's choir from Kabubbu came to the UK to raise money for their village and speak and perform in schools around the south east of England.  They were accommodated at  Westbrook Hay School in Hemel Hempstead and gave an energetic and thrilling performance in morning assembly, singing, drumming and dancing to traditional songs and performing inspiring gospel songs.

Following their terrific performance the children and Year 5 went into the woods to build a camp fire and recreate the kind of food environment  that the Ugandan children have in their village.  They boiled water in a cauldron over an open fire and added the maize to create a kind of thin porridge. The Ugandan children drink this from a mug for breakfast. Once the maize solidifies they serve it with beans  for lunch and dinner, meat and vegetables are occasionally eaten on a Friday.

The children shared songs and played together in the woods. The Kabubbu girls showed Westbrook Hay girls how to create different hair designs from scarves and the boys taught the Westbrook Hay boys how to drum. Then as the children began to relax in each others' company they spontaneously began to sing together songs they both knew. Really there was so little difference between the children, they all laughed at the same things and loved to play and scamp about in amongst the leaves and trees and jostle for turns on the swing.

Of course their circumstances could not be more opposite. When the Ugandan orphans left Westbrook Hay and flew home that night for Uganda they arrived home to a very stark and different world to the one our children take for granted at Westbrook Hay.
