Karen's Personal Update from 2007 London Marathon:-

Hi Everyone! Thanks for sponsoring me...Yesturday was an awesome day, the crowd were fantastic, it was a very hot day and I think it took it's toll with Vittel Water stands running out of water frequently it was hard to keep energised but luckily enough the Lucozade stands never ran out so I kept one of those on me for the moments I became dizzy and faint. You can see the running times above and to be honest it was only ever my intention to finish in one piece but as I'm quite self critical I would have quite liked to have run in 6 hours. ....I was quite happy jogging along slowly up until 16 miles...Listening to the crowd shouting my name (if you wear your name on your shirt the crowd cheer you on), listening to steel bands on route and watching mr tickle and mr womble run past! At mile 16 my knees became excrutiating and I decided to walk/run the next few miles at 20 miles the agony became so great tears of pain began to fall and I didn't want to go on so I decided that as much as I had wanted to run the entire race I would have to walk the rest to finish the race. I walked for almost 6 miles to the end...I met a wonderful chap named Jon running for Asthma and we talked about his family who were there to support him and my family and it really helped me...at 800 metres to go he wanted to run ahead so I then walked the next 600 metres on my own until I met up with a lady who was somewhat flagging, I told her that I wanted to run the last 200 metres and thought that perhaps she might like to run with me as we both might regret it if we didn't and we finished!.....

Funniest part of the day at mile 20 when some spectator shouted "Come on Karen, you can still win this!" Although I was highly aware he was probably shouting this at all the runners it just put a massive much needed smile upon my face which at this stage was greatly needed!. Best part of the marathon was the crowd and the runners and my parents unfloundering support. the entire way around the course, whenever I was flagging there they were to encourage me as ever! xx....NEVER AGAIN! xxxxxx

p.s. Think I may have run a better timed race if I had not needed the toilet since I set off!!!! I spent 26 miles thinking of going to the toilets but there was always a massive queue and I knew if I stopped that my legs would seize up!! I did look for bushes along the route but was too much of a prude!
