"We cannot lower the mountain – We can only elevate ourselves"

At 5,895 metres (19,340 feet) Kilimanjaro is not only Africa's highest peak, it is also the highest freestanding mountain in the world. In June this year, I aim to climb to the summit of the 'Roof of Africa,' with a group of 35 other students. Temperatures  will range from 40°C at the base of Kilimanjaro to a glacial –25°C at the summit. The climb itself will take 10 days from start to finish. During the climb, we will not only be battling exhaustion, dehydration and the extreme temperatures, but also a variety of altitude related illnesses.

WHY DO THIS YOU MAY ASK..............................

Well, the expedition as a whole, is taking 251 students, all of whom have a target of £2200 to meet before the climb. This money will be utilised to help the vulnerable children of the third world gain an improved and greater access to amenities so often taken for granted. Such as clean water, sufficient food supplies, access to basic health care and educational projects. Whilst in Tanzania, I will be spending time volunteering at Childreach International projects and will be able to witness firsthand how your sponsorship money will make a difference to these children's lives.

To give you an idea of what a huge difference your money will make, here are some examples:

  • £2 pays for a mother and child living in a remote area of Nepal to attend a health camp and receive life-saving vaccinations
  • £5 per month pays for an orphan in Tanzania to attend a vocational training Centre, allowing them to work towards a recognised qualification
  • £50 buys exercise books for a primary school in Uganda
  • £400 pays for a water pump to be installed in a village in Africa so children can get clean, safe water.

However, we can only reach our target with the help of people like yourselves!! By donating online, you may be eligible for Gift Aid, which adds an extra 28p for every £1 you donate.  That  means for a donation of £20, Gift Aid will add a whopping £5.60!

So I've got four months to transform myself from a lazy lump into a mountain climber. When we reach the top (fingers crossed!) we will be treated with a performance of the Kilimanjaro Song as displayed on the left. Surely thats enough to keep me going!!!!

Thank you very much for all your support

Katharine x
