I did it! This year I competed in the Mazda London Triathlon to raise funds for Chernobyl Children's Lifeline. It was my third Olympic distance triathlon, and I completed the course in 3 hours 2 mins.
The aim of Chernobyl Children's Lifeline is to help children from Belarus by bringing them to the UK for one month of respite from the relentless bombardment of radiation in the continuing aftermath of the world's worst nuclear disaster.
Belarus was the region hit most heavily by the disaster with 70% of fallout landing on its territory. Today more than 2 million people in Belarus still live in contaminated areas, where there is no access to "clean" food. People still till their fields, herd cattle and eat the contaminated produce of their labours. The impact on children born subsequent to the disaster is beyond comprehension: the rise in childhood cancers is phenomenal: leukemia, tumours and thyroid cancers are rife. The ingestion of so much contamination has caused a steep rise in cases of intestinal cancers and heart defects.
For the children lucky enough to come to the UK with CCLL, it is the trip of a lifetime. It is estimated that a month staying with a host family here, eating nourishing food, resting and breathing clean air can add 2 years to their life expectancy. It costs £400 to bring each child across and this summer, the Richmond link of the charity brought 14 children over. Two of them stayed with our family for a month.
