Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Just a quick up date as it's now 10/01/10 & in 3 weeks time exactly we'll be sat on a plane heading for Naiorobi !! It's all getting really exciting. We met up with couple ( Val & Rob) last weekend who are also on the trip, they only live across the bridge at Cinderford. We had a lovely, snowy, slippy walk up the Sugar Loaf with them & hot choc after. they seemed really pleasant & I'm sure we'll get along fine. It's actually Vals 50th birthday the day after we get down Kili - so we're already planning a party !!!
I start physio with ultrasound today on my ankle, so hopefully that'll be sorted before we go. It's not bad when strapped up & in walking boots , so I should be fine.
Anyway i'll leave you alone now but please feel free to donate either online, or the 'old fashioned' cash method.
THANKS
As many of you know, Karen & I are off to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in February. We've been training all year, in our own little ways, but now we're upping the exercise & I've even dusted off my running shoes & taken to the road again !!
I've really enjoyed all the hillwalking I've done with various friends throughout the year, in various weather conditions in the Brecons, Lake District, Exmoor, etc. - so if you're one of them thanks for putting up with me.
We decided to take on this challenge about 18 months ago, and have funded ourselves to go with Exodus Travel. About 12 months ago we thought that if we're going on this mad adventure then we should get sponsored & raise funds for something we both feel strongly about. As you can imagine, 2 women can never agree on things so we've chosen different charities!!!
Karen has opened a justgiving account to raise funds for the BUI ( Bristol Urological Institute,- it does what it says on the tin) for whom she works. They work in research & treament for all areas of peeing related problems. - www.justgiving.com/karenkilimanjaro
My chosen charity is 'for dementia', & the Admiral Nurses.
I first became aware of Admiral Nurses when I heard John Suchet talk on TV earlier this year about the care & support that he & his wife received from them, after she was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease. It made me realise that had we had that kind of community support when Mum was diagnosed, life may have been a little easier.
Admiral Nurses
Admiral Nurses are specialist mental health nurses specialising in dementia. Admiral Nurses work with family carers and people with dementia, in the community and other settings. Working collaboratively with other professionals, Admiral Nurses seek to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers. They use a range of interventions that help people live positively with the condition and develop skills to improve communication and maintain relationships.
Established as a result of the experiences of family carers, Admiral Nurses are named after Joseph Levy who had vascular dementia and was known as Admiral Joe because of his keen interest in sailing.
for dementia works in partnership with NHS providers and commissioners, social care authorities and voluntary sector organisations to promote and develop new Admiral Nursing services. The charity is responsible for upholding standards, sustaining service and supporting Admiral Nurses in practice.
Unfortunately services are still limited to only a small area nationally, but in time with more financial support & recognition Admiral Nurses will be able to cover more areas. There are plans for the South West in the pipeline.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep and donate now. If however you'd like to donate the 'old-fashioned' way, with cash or a cheque then those gifts would also be most welcome.
Please feel free to forward this on to anyone who you feel may be interested.
Thanks
Kathy
