Story
I wanted to send you this message given your kindness in supporting my cycle ride for Marie Curie, Bike the Baltic.
I am delighted to report that I successfully completed the challenge. I started in Trakai, near Vilnius, on 25 August, reached Riga in Latvia on 29 August, and then completed my journey in Tallinn on 5 September. The advertised distance was 1042 kms. I am awaiting confirmation of the actual mileage, but I know that it was something around 1100 kms. The cycling was challenging - particularly because we faced strong headwinds in Lithuania and Latvia. But it was also hugely enjoyable. The countryside was delightful, particularly in Estonia; and I enjoyed some excellent companionship with the other riders in both weeks. As I pedalled along, I did think of the many people who had taken the trouble to support me and that certainly helped me keep up.
Thank you again for those who have already supported me. As you know, the proceeds are going to a very good cause. Many cancer and other patients and their families will benefit directly. I was very conscious as I cycled along that these are patients who would not have the chance to cycle through the Baltic States as I was lucky enough to be able to do.
If anyone is interested in any of the Baltic countries, I would be very happy to share my experience in more detail. I would particularly recommend Riga (Latvia) and also Parnu and Haapsalu in Estonia.
Thanks to those of you who have already donated, I have raised nearly £7,000. The opportunity to contribute will remain open until November.
Dare I say it, there are photos of the trip - which, if nothing else, provide evidence of my participation on www.flickr.com/groups/bikethebaltic/. And, for anyone who may be interested in taking part in any future events, there are a selection on www.mariecurie.org.uk/events/overseas_challenges/.
Thank you so much for your support.
Ken
