To mark my retirement last year after 50 years in the construction industry and my 2nd year as President of the Lighthouse club, I am going to climb Mt Toubkal, which at 4200 metres (13700 ft) is the highest mountain in North Africa. I wish to show my gratitude of all those who work so tirelessly for the Lighthouse Club by climbing this mountain and hopefully raising money to support the Club in the good work it does.
The climb itself whilst not technical is described as challenging, with altitude sickness being a possible problem.
Leaving Imi Ourgland we climb to 6000ft and then for the next two days we climb to 8000ft. The intent is to slowly acclimatise our bodies before the ascent. On day four we climb a long rising traverse to the Netner Reguge 10522 ft, where we stay the night. Leaving the Refuge at 5am I intend to take the steeper but shorter route, which will involve a long scramble over steep scree; then follows a crest up to the summit, where God willing, my old bones and lungs keep going and we get a decent weather interval, I will arrive after a four to five hour climb. I have not given much thought to the descent, but I am working on it.
