Who are we?
Kanaama Interactive is a community development project, relying on unpaid UK volunteers. We bring visitors and volunteers to south-west Uganda to participate in community activities, and to exchange experiences and ideas about development. Look at our website: www.kiafrica.org.
Since 2008, supporters have helped fund social projects: a school water harvesting tank, three church renovations, school stationery and books, child sponsorships and hives for bees. In 2009 we formed Kanaama Interactive Community Support (charity no 1132288), which prioritises women’s microcredit in Kashare sub-county.
What do we want to achieve?
By offering loans and small enterprise training Kanaama Interactive aims to:
· enable women to lift themselves and their families out of poverty
· transform lives through enterprise
· fight financial exclusion and encourage financial literacy
Small businesses improve livelihoods and help women take ownership and responsibility. They empower those who would be excluded from even having a bank account by providing micro-loans to start up and create income.
Where do we go from here?
Since July 2010 twelve groups involving 60 women have acquired financial skills and started businesses. Isebail Mackinnon, experienced trainer in Grameen small group methods, is training two local workers to manage and monitor the project. They are currently training 20 poorer women in preparatory numeracy and literacy. From September 2011 the project will include agricultural training, to address climate change and improve the use of existing resources such as water and wood.
During 2012 the project will grow to 100, benefiting 1,000 people (sub-county popul 6,000).
What can you do to help?
Generous donations have so far raised £15,763. In order to consolidate and extend this work we need to raise a further £9,712. We hope you would like to be part of this project. Every little helps!
