Why your donation matters

Exceptionally vulnerable and traumatised children often hide their abuse in order to survive. Many feel helpless and alone. At Kids Company we never give up on a child and do whatever it takes to return them to a safer childhood and positive future.

Each year over 550,000 cases of child abuse and neglect are referred to social services, but due to the strain on resources, over 90% of children are left without support. They effectively become lone children, without a voice or any real chance of breaking the cycle of abuse and feelings of despair. We see the impact of this every day at our centres which is why we need your help. Every penny that you donate helps us make a lasting difference to the lives of the 14,000 children and young people we support.

Case study: donations in action

Imagine being a 6-year-old. Your mum has left you alone and locked the door. You’re starving. Neighbours know you’re hungry and push food through the letterbox. They don’t tell social services because they’re scared of your mum’s boyfriend. The food makes it a good day. On a bad day you draw pictures of food on pieces of paper and swallow them. Imagine being a 16-year-old. An escapee of family sexual abuse. You’re in a hostel alone, the cooker, shower and bed crammed into a tiny room, you can barely move. You’re terrified. There’s no adult supervision; psychiatric patients, drug dealers, alcoholics are your neighbours. Your entire state benefit is £42.50 a week, to pay for gas, electricity, and a portion of your rent and travel. We’re only asking you to imagine it, but too many children in Britain are living it. These are true stories of some of the children at Kids Company. With your help we provide a safe, caring environment, tailoring our support to the needs of each individual.
