Cycle Jordan 2009

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page which will be updated.

I am responding to an appeal by leading infertility expert Professor Robert Winston to join a testing, women-only cycling challenge in to raise funds to improve the health of women and babies.

The 9 Women for Women cycling challenge will take place 11 to 18 October 2009.  It will be an amazing five-day cycling adventure through challenging desert terrain.  Highlights of the ride will be cycling through the Dead Sea valley, the lowest point on earth, camping under the stars in Bedouin tents and the spectacular red rock city ofPetra.

The Women for Women Cycle Jordan involves cycling over 300 kms from the Dead Sea valley through the desert to the red rock city of Petra. I need to raise a minimum of £2,500. Your donation will enable me to participate in the fundraising challenge as well as supporting the groundbreaking medical research work at the Wolfson and Weston Centre for Family Health inLondon. Wolfson and Weston Centre for Family Health brings together the largest team of doctors and scientists in , is a centre of excellence unparalleled inEurope and runs internationally renowned teaching programmes.

Funds raised by Cycle Jordan will enable women scientists and clinicians to specialise in research affecting women and their babies – empowering more women to lead in this field.  They will work in the research centre to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment in a range of devastating conditions which cause miscarriage, genetic diseases, infertility, cancer and brain damage.  With up to 250 babies dying every week in the from complications during pregnancy, their work has never been so essential for women and babies nationwide.

Women for Women is administered by the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Trust and Professor Winston is Chairman of both the Trust and Women for Women.  Professor Winston is perhaps best known for his work in popularising science looking at a few Millennium babies in Child of our Time and BBC programmes on medical advances.

I have not cycled more than a few miles in my life so this will be a major challenge, especially as I currently have a 15 year old hybrid bike!

Fundraising plans include Midsummer ceilidh party at Eddleston Village hall 20 June, part of my fitness training is the Dublin 10K (never raced before so 10k is a challenge) - so guess my time, one pound a guess and win a bottle of champagne if correct; guess the weight of the simnel cake for Easter and Kath Stewart’s pupils’ concert 23 May 2-4pm in Eddleston village hall.  Collection boxes are available at Artformers, Forsyths and Little Monkeys in Peebles, so please help all you can.  I am also offering to do tennis coaching, atEddlestonPrimary School and golf coaching if sponsored. If you would like me to help with any local project in return for sponsorship then please get in touch.

I would like to give a special thank you to Rogerson’s Footwear and David Harrison Ltd  for their generous donation!

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Women for Women and the Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Trust fund for Cycle Jordan will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 25% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you so please say if you are a UK tax payer otherwise the charity is charged a commission of up to 6.4%, depending on your card type from the donation.

Please sponsor me now and make a real and lasting difference for women and babies!

Yours in anticipation,

Kirsty
