In January this year, a very close family friend lost his life to cancer. He had only been diagnosed in December. Until a few weeks before the diagnosis, he appeared to be a fit and healthy man in his fifties with years ahead of him. Instead, this frightening disease has left his wife and two children, and all those who knew him, bereft.
Nowadays, one in three people are diagnosed with some form of cancer during their life time, and most of us are indirectly affected by a family or friend's diagnosis. Bob's tragic death, as well as other losses suffered by those close to me over the last few years, has made me determined to raise awareness of this disease and to raise as much money as possible for a cancer charity.
I will be running the London marathon for a small cancer charity called Tenovus. It carries out vital research into the causes of cancer and its scientists have been responsible for the development of drugs which are now used worldwide to treat breast and prostate cancer. In addition to its ground breaking research, it has built a system of cancer support services, including a freephone cancer support line, online nurse support as well as access to counselling and oncology nurse specialists. It is also setting up local cancer support centres to offer services such as individual and family counselling and bereavement support and it is launching mobile cancer units which will deliver chemotherapy, emotional and practical support, and will run cancer education and awareness programmes.
