My story

I am a Dad of one and an Uncle to many, including one special little girl called Lauren Sophie Tranter, or Lo So to her family and friends.Lauren was born in Sheffield on the 23rd of October 2010 weighing a healthy very normal 7lb 6oz to my sister in law Claire and her husband Mathew. She was a very contented baby and despite a few initial feeding problems started to gain weight.
At the age of 3 months Claire and Mathew realised something was not quite right and decided to get it checked out. Lauren was not putting on weight and was vomiting quite a lot, her liver had also become enlarged. This was the start of what would be numerous stays at Sheffield Childrens hospital under many consultants. After several months Lauren was finally diagnosed as having a rare condition called Mitochondrial Disease, and was given medication to control it.
From 6 - 9 months Lauren started to gain a little weight, she gradually built the strength to hold her head up, sit, roll and wave. At 9 months she started givings kisses and cuddles. She began to say a few words and loved spending time with her cousin, my daughter Lydia. She was a very special and loving little girl. In September Claire and Mathew were told that Lauren's Liver had stopped responding to treatment and that all they could do now was make her comfortable. They were referred to Bluebell Woods to receive some much needed respite and eventual palatative care. Lauren passed peacefully away on October 10th 2011 in her parents arms, two weeks before her first birthday. Under the care of the her parents and the committed staff at Bluebell Wood Laurens last few weeks were made comfortable and happy. The staff at Bluebell wood hospice are wonderful and the support they gave Claire, Mathew and all the family in the time we spent there was so important. Laurens full story has been shared by her parents on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4MBpguCU-U.
It costs £2.5 million every year for Bluebell Wood to offer the support they gave Claire and Mathew, to the families that need it. It is a place filled with laughter and love, giving the families the chance to relax, take a break and have fun. With no statutory government funding, without the help of supporters they couldn’t help all the children that they do. Having spent some time at the hospice with Lauren, I realise what a special place it is for all who need to go there and with your help I would like to raise funds to say Thank you for the care they gave Lauren and will continue to give Claire and Mathew and many other children and families in the years to come.
