Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. I really appreciate it. In September 2006 my husband Pete and I will be trekking through the Andes on the Inca Trail to raise money for Action on Pre-Eclampsia. We will be spending five days in the mountains, walking for at least eight hours a day, through eerie-sounding places like The Pass of the Dead Woman, and ending at Machu Picchu. Can't wait!!

Pete and I have decided to do this trek as we feel that we want to give something back to the charity. APEC supported me through my second pregnancy with Jim, and helped me to come to terms with what happened when I had Joe. The picture on this page is all I saw of Joe for the first five days of his life - the nurses took a Polaroid of him so at least I knew what he looked like! Joe was born five weeks early but had stopped growing five weeks before that - and if they hadn't delivered him when they did, we both would not have survived. He was very small and I was very sick, and it took us a long time to recover - so when I found out that I was pregnant with Jim, I was almost as terrified as I was delighted. APEC gave me the information and support I needed, so that I and those looking after me could make the right decisions to keep me as safe and as happy as possible, even when things got scary.

APEC is a small medical charity and desperately needs funds to encourage research, to provide training for medical staff and to help get information to pregnant women, mothers and families who need to know about pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia can be a life-threatening condition for both mothers and babies; its cause is unknown, but once established the only cure is delivery of the baby. Early detection is essential for the best outcome, and this is only possible if both mothers and medics are well informed. But obviously, prevention is better than cure, and so further research is vital to establish why it happens in the first place, and what might be done to stop or delay it developing. APEC's other crucial task is to coordinate support for mothers and families before and after the births of their babies, through the Helpline, the web board and through the Befriending Service (short- or longterm one-to-one support provided by trained volunteers).

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Action on Pre-Eclampsia will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Please give as much as you can. If you want to sponsor Pete separately, go to his Justgiving page - http://www.justgiving.co.uk/petethomas/; or if you want to buy a CD, samples or saxophone tutor DVD (profits go to this...) visit his own webpage at http://www.petethomas.co.uk/. Thank you SO much. It means a lot. Laurie
