I am probably the most unfit, unlikely fitness fanatic you know. However between 29th September and 11th October 2007, I will be joining around 60 people cycling through the remote and traditional (hilly!) north of Vietnam as part of Macmillan Cancer Support's Vietnam Cycling Challenge. We will be cycling for eight consecutive days and covering just over 700km and lots of hills!
Almost all of us have been affected by cancer in some way or another:– my own dear dad died of lung cancer 10 years ago, more recently a favourite uncle of stomach cancer, the lovely father of my oldest friend of leukaemia and an all-round-good-egg of a friend of cancer of the pancreas. A dear school friend has bravely survived breast cancer and Nick, the wonderful man in my life had cancer of the throat three years ago and now, clear of this terrible illness, lives a full and active life.
Having never had a bike as a child, I've not been riding long and Nick bought me my first bike in December to practice on and has been extremely patient with my pathetic attempts to keep upright. I'm getting there now though, you'll be pleased to know and should soon be capable of mountain-biking up the north face of K2!! (Well OK, maybe not quite K2!).
My fab fun-loving travel companion, Sue, has also joined the team now, although I reckon our journey through Vietnam on a bike with our toilet roll and box of matches will be a slightly different experience to anything we've ever done before, although I suspect equally enjoyable! (I think!). Did I mention the hills?!
