My story

 
In August I will be trekking the NORDKALOTTLEDEN, an 800km hiking trail around the Artic Circle.  Myself and five other will form a team of six from England and Germany and we'll be covering approximately 200km of the route over an estimated 10 day period in order to raise money for Sands and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

I am a full-time Paramedic for the East Midlands Ambulance Service and have experienced firsthand the valuable services these two charities offer.

Sands is close to my heart as I have two great friends in Carolyn and Grev whose daughter, Rebecca, was sadly stillborn nearly six years ago.  I have also experienced the devastation caused, when whilst working for the London Ambulance Service we were called to a newborn baby that needed urgent medical assistance.

Tragically, in the UK 17 babies are either stillborn or die within the first for weeks of life.  Sands supports anyone affected by the death of a baby while working in partnership with health professionals to improve the quality of care and services offered to bereaved families.  In addition they promote research and changes in practice that could help to reduce the loss of babies lives.

The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance is the second charity I have chosen as obviously whilst working as a Paramedic I have attended incidents where the air ambulance has been called.  I seriously appreciate the benefits it has to any person who is unfortunately seriously injured and quite literally can be the difference between life and death.

DLRAA is a new air ambulance services and relies entirely on voluntary donations from local companies, organisationsand comunities.  It provides life saving treatment and medication on site and en-route to hospital. This is an invaluable service in cases where land ambulances are unable to access the scene or where transfer by land ambulance would be too slow or create more injury to the patient.   Their primary response area is the 2,100 square miles of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.
