TeenBoundariesUK works with schools to combat sexual and cyber bullying. TeenBoundaries focuses on both victims, helping them gain the resilience and knowledge they need to protect themselves, and perpetrators, by getting them to scrutinise their own actions.
The Founder of TeenBoundaries, Leonie Hodge, comments:
"I feel let down that education did not provide myself and my peers with education concerning healthy relationships and the changes in society’s gender representations, which influence our behaviour. It is difficult to make healthy choices if you are not educated in what these are.
We need more work with young people and families to ensure we are not encouraging attitudes that gender violence and abuse is acceptable.
1/3 of people in the UK believe that a victim of rape is to blame in some way. Is it any surprise with shocking attitudes like this that only 1% of rape victims report the crime and the conviction rate is around 7%?
I for one will never find this acceptable.
By empowering young people to understand the context of the behaviour they see in the media and the behaviour of their peers, then you are demystifying behaviour which at first can seem appealing to gain more peer approval. You have to intervene to ensure young people understand why risky behaviour will not meet all their needs they have and educate them that there is another way. Prevention through education also contributes to cohesion within families’
