Our cousin Brian Barkley died in the North Sea Helicopter crash on 1st April 2009. The RNLI were a key part of the initial search and rescue and then the recovery efforts on the scene. They helped in recovering the bodies of those who lost their lives to their families and loved ones.
RNLI lifeboats from Peterhead and Fraserburgh launched during the early hours of this morning (Thursday 2 April) to recommence the search for the eight people that remain missing from the helicopter that went down in the North Sea yesterday.
The Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat coxswain is the on-scene co-ordinator, conducting inline searches in an area designated by the Coastguard. It is understood that debris has been found during the search this morning. Weather conditions are said to be fair to calm, with a SE wind.
RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews from both stations are currently working closely with the RAF and Aberdeen Coastguard, who are co-ordinating the search. The helicopter is believed to have ditched 10 miles east of Rattray Head (between Fraserburgh and Peterhead) yesterday afternoon.
Initial reports to the RNLI indicate that there were 16 people onboard the helicopter – 14 passengers and two pilots.
