London to Rome 2012 - Our Story
Easter 2011 Andrew Parkinson and Russell Dengel completed the John O’Groats to Land’s End cycle ride. Soon after Andrew set his sights on another long distance cycle – London to Rome.
Andrew floated the idea amongst his cycling friends, of which four agreed to join him for the challenge. The cycling team is Andrew Parkinson, John Lowery, William Taylor, Simon Davies and Brian Rycroft – aged between 40 and 54 years – totalling 250 years!
The cycle route chosen is about 1,100 miles and will be covered in 13 days. The ride begins in Trafalgar Square on 27 April 2012. We will travel through Eastern France to Switzerland, cross over the Alps on the Mont Blanc road between Montreux (Switzerland) and Aosta (Italy), and then wind our way through Northern and Western Italy to Rome.
Given all five will cycle the full distance, a support vehicle and driver was sought – Askam Construction have kindly agreed to provide a vehicle and Jim Nicholson has volunteered to drive and lend support.
So we are a team of six. We will be entirely self-financed and, therefore, every penny raised will be for St John’s Hospice.
