Why your donation matters

Since the 1950s, more than 60% of England's orchards have vanished due to cheap fruit imports and pressure on land. 70% of apples, pears, and plums are imported, despite the fact they could easily be grown here. Bananas! At the same time, not all Londoners have access to fresh, pesticide residue free fruit, and Londoners living in poorer areas are less likely to be eating their 5 of day of fruit and vegetables. In inner-city areas, some Londoners also lack access to green spaces. Our project is working to address all these interrelated issues. Our city orchards make Londoners more self-sufficient, help them develop skills, and improve their diet. They reduce food miles, act as carbon sinks and encourage wildlife- and bring Londoners together around a common project.

Case study: donations in action

We've been working with volunteers at Hackney City Farm to help plant an edible forest- in time, this neglected part of Haggerston Park will be transformed into an orchard with 15 trees, and other edible plants and bushes.
